WBS, EPS & Types

P6 Activity Types (Six) — Not MSP Task Type

Six P6 activity types; not MSP task type; WBS Summary is a TASK, not a WBS band

P6 General tab Activity Type: Task Dependent.
Activity Type is a General-tab field. It is not the WBS name.

What a planner means

Activity type is how dates and duration are calculated, not how much work there is. Oracle Professional: six types; every activity has one. Different from duration type (Duration ↔ Units ↔ Units/Time). See P6 Duration Types (Four) vs Project Task Types (Three).

XER: TASK.task_type (Oracle label: Activity Type). Default: PROJECT.def_task_type. Stored codes are not in the XER column map. Do not invent TT_* tokens.

The six (Oracle UI)

TypeCalendar / durationOracle
Task DependentActivity calendar, not resource calendarsControl the duration yourself (cure concrete). Assigned resources follow the activity calendar.
Resource DependentResource calendarsDuration can move with resource availability. Use when people work on their own calendars.
Level of EffortDuration from predecessors/successorsOngoing admin. See Level of Effort (Task.task_type).
Start MilestoneZero duration, no resourcesBeginning of a phase.
Finish MilestoneZero duration, no resourcesEnd of a phase. See Start vs Finish Milestones.
WBS SummaryRollup of activities that share a WBS levelEarliest start and latest finish of that group. Not a live rollup — calculated when you schedule. Constraints and Expected Finish are not allowed. This is still a TASK, not a PROJWBS node. See P6 WBS.

Integration API lists display strings Task Dependent, Resource Dependent, Level of Effort, Milestone, WBS Summary, and also has FINISH_MILESTONE. UI still shows Start vs Finish milestone as two types. Do not collapse them in a viewer.

Microsoft Project

Project has no six-way activity type. A “milestone” is usually a 0-duration task. A “summary” is outline indent, not a WBS Summary activity. Task vs resource calendars is a different switch (task calendar optional). LOE does not exist.

Do not map task_type to MSPDI Task Type (0/1/2 — those are Fixed Units/Duration/Work). Must not draw a WBS Summary activity as a WBS band. Must not treat WBS Summary dates as live until the file is rescheduled.
