Project Online Retirement: What Changes for Schedule Files

Microsoft lists Project Online retirement for September 30, 2026; SAL Tools works from exported files and does not connect to Project Online

Microsoft's Project Online lifecycle notice lists September 30, 2026 as the retirement date.

This is a notice about the Project Online service. It is not a claim that SAL Tools connects to Project Online, and it does not by itself retire Project desktop, Project Server, or the files you already hold.

What SAL Tools can do

SAL Tools works from schedule files you provide. You can export a schedule, then use the tools to view, check, clean, convert, or report on that file. The tools do not sign in to, read from, or publish back to Project Online.

When sharing an XER outside the original team, XER Cleaner includes Anonymise for sharing. It replaces project, WBS, activity, resource, calendar, and activity-code labels with neutral tokens while keeping identifiers, dates, and predecessor logic intact. Keep the original file and review the result before distribution.

Plan the handoff

Export the schedules and reports your team needs before the retirement date, document which fields matter to your process, and test the exported files in the target workflow. Microsoft has not said that every Project Online field has a one-to-one replacement in another product; treat migration as a review of the files and process, not a file-name swap.
