Assignment Codes Tag TASKRSRC, Not the Resource

Assignment codes tag TASKRSRC; not the resource or the role

P6 Resources tab. Assignment columns include Role, Start, Finish, and units.
These are assignment rows. Assignment codes are a pick-list on the assignment, not a resource name.

What a planner means

Assignment codes classify resource and role assignments on activities. Oracle: they are user-defined and defined globally. Use them to filter assignments, or to group assignments for analysis in layouts, profiles, and spreadsheets.

They sit on the assignment (TASKRSRC), not on the resource dictionary and not on the role. Two assignments of the same resource can carry different assignment-code values. They are not resource codes, not role codes, and not activity codes.

REST: for each assignment code type, an assignment may have zero or one value. The assignment object ID is the pair (resource assignment, assignment code).

Creating a code: unique name, optional Secure, maximum length for value names. Values are hierarchical (parent_asgnmnt_catg_id).

Microsoft Project

MSP assignments have fields (Units, Work, Cost) and no assignment-code dictionary. Outline codes are task or resource. Do not map ASGNMNTACAT to a resource outline code or to Text1.

Don't

  • Treat assignment codes as resource codes, role codes, or activity codes.
  • Put assignment codes on RSRC or TASK.
  • Assign two values of the same assignment code type to one TASKRSRC.
  • Map ASGNMNTCATTYPE to RCATTYPE or ACTVTYPE.
