Documents and Work Products Are Files, Not Notebooks

DOCUMENT / TASKDOC; work product is an assignment flag; not a notebook

P6 EPS / Projects tree. Enterprise nodes hold projects such as EC00515.
This is the project tree. A document is a file attached to the project or WBS, not this tree.

What a planner means

A document is a file or work product you add to the project (drawings, specs, transmittals). Oracle: store, organize, and relate them. With a content repository, you get check-in/out and reviews; without it, you can only add, delete, and relate project documents. Private documents (repository on) are personal and not tied to a project.

You assign a document to a WBS or an activity. You can mark that assignment as a work product only after it is assigned. deliv_flag is Deliverable on the document itself. Work product is an assignment flag (TASKDOC.wp_flag), not a second table.

This is not a notebook (MEMOTYPE text), not a UDF, and not schedule logic. Linking a drawing does not move dates.

You can assign only documents created for that project.

Microsoft Project

Desktop Project has Hyperlink (URL/path on the task) and Notes. Neither is a document register with category, version, deliverable, and WBS/activity assignment. Do not map DOCUMENT to Notes or to a single Hyperlink and call them the same object.

Don't

  • Treat DOCUMENT as a notebook, UDF, or step.
  • Treat wp_flag as a document type, or deliv_flag as an assignment.
  • Assume the XER contains the file. It has metadata and locations.
  • Collapse many documents into one MSP Notes/Hyperlink field without saying rows were lost.
