A Location

Location is lat/long on project/activity/resource; not an activity code

P6 EPS / Projects tree. Enterprise nodes hold projects such as EC00515.
This is the project tree. A location is a geo dictionary, not an EPS node.

What a planner means

Oracle: a location is a geographical point — longitude and latitude. You type coordinates or a street address and P6 fills lat/long. Assign one to a project, an activity, and/or a resource. Purpose: Analytics maps (country / region / city), plus sort / group / filter on Activities and EPS. The assignments view cannot group or filter by location.

This is not an activity code, not OBS, not WBS, not a notebook.

XER

FKs on the project map (Oracle labels):

ColumnOracle label
PROJECT.location_idProject Location
TASK.location_idActivity Location
RSRC.location_idResource Location

Oracle note on PROJECT.location_id: P6 Professional exports all Locations in Enterprise Data, used or not. P6 (EPPM) exports only Locations assigned to the exported projects, their activities, and their resources.

Oracle: P6 Professional does not import locations assigned to resources.

The project XER map pages cited do not list a LOCATION table with lat/long columns. Spreadsheet import of locations (enterprise data) requires Name, Latitude, Longitude (lat −90..90, long −180..180). Do not invent LOCATION.latitude as an XER column name.

Microsoft Project

Desktop Project has no location object. Hyperlink Address is a URL. Shops fake a Text or Outline Code. Do not map location_id to Text1 or to Hyperlink Address.

Don't

  • Treat a location as an activity code, OBS, or WBS.
  • Treat TASK.location_id as the project location.
  • Invent LOCATION lat/long columns on a project XER parse.
  • Assume Professional imported resource locations (Oracle: it does not).
  • Group the assignments view by location (Oracle: cannot).
