XER, XML & MPP Files
File > Import Starts the Import Wizard; It
Import is File > Import the Import wizard; not Send Project, File > Export, Job Services, or Check In

What a planner means
Import is File > Import. Oracle File Menu: "Starts the Import wizard. Use the Import wizard to import projects, resources, or roles from other Oracle applications, Microsoft Project, or Microsoft Excel." Enabled when the active window is "All." Corresponding toolbar: Action Toolbar. How-tos: File, Import.
This command is not File > Export (the Export wizard). It is not File > Send Project (creates an XER and emails it). See Send Project Creates an XER and Emails It; It. It is not Tools > Job Services (Professional has no Import job type). See Job Services. It is not File > Check Out / Check In. See Check Out. It is not File > Exchange Data. It is not the command-line "export or import projects as a service" path. It is not the XER field catalog. See XER Tables That Matter for a Viewer or Converter and P6 XML vs XER.
Oracle Import an XER email attachment: "In the email containing the XER project, double-click the attached XER file." "The module opens automatically (if not already open) and launches the Import wizard. The file name is automatically populated in the wizard." That is this wizard, not Send Project.
Action Toolbar: same "Starts the Import wizard" sentence; menu command File > Import. The Action toolbar is "not displayed" by default. "The import, export, check in, and check out icons on this toolbar display by default when you choose to show the toolbar." "The icons on this toolbar do not have corresponding shortcut keys."
Hot keys: Alt-F, I = Import. That is the File-menu hot key. Quote both the toolbar "no corresponding shortcut keys" sentence and Alt-F, I. Do not collapse them.
File > Export is a different command. Oracle File Menu: Export "Starts the Export wizard. Use the Export wizard to export projects, resources, or roles to other Oracle applications, Microsoft Project, or Microsoft Excel. You can also export projects in UN/CEFACT, IPMDAR, and CPP format." Import does not start that wizard. Oracle did not print UN/CEFACT, IPMDAR, or CPP on the Import wizard format table.
Check In is a different command. File > Check In starts the Check In wizard. Do not treat File > Import as Check In. See Check Out.
Professional wizard fields Oracle names
Oracle Importing information using a wizard table (quote Oracle file-format and information-type names; do not invent others):

Oracle Import/Export file formats (same guide; quote Oracle):
- XER — "The Oracle proprietary format (XER) supports all project, resource, and role information." "The Primavera PM XER file format enables you to export data between P6 Professional release 5.0 or more recent versions, for use within P6 Professional." "The Contractor XER format is supported to import data from Contractor 4.0 and subsequent versions into PM."
- Primavera P6 XML — "enables you to share project and baseline information between P6 Professional or P6 EPPM databases."
- XLSX — "enable you to share information with other spreadsheet applications."
- MPX — "enables you to share information with Microsoft Project, as well as to integrate with other third-party tools."
- Microsoft Project XML — "enables you to share information with Microsoft Project 2007, 2010, and 2013."
- UN/CEFACT, IPMDAR, CPP — named on that page as export formats. Oracle did not list them on the Import wizard table.
The current Import wizard table does not name P3, Primavera Project Planner, or MPP. Do not invent those as wizard formats.
Wizard-summary notes Oracle printed (quote Oracle): "Imported data from other applications may look different when it is scheduled in P6 Professional." The same page also prints two "This setting is available…" sentences (Professional: Admin, Users, Project Access tab; EPPM: from P6) without naming the setting on that page. Do not invent which setting they mean.
Import Action / Import To (quote per format)
Oracle did not print one Import Action list for every format. Quote the list on the how-to that names it. Do not copy XML Ignore this Project onto XER. Do not copy XER Replace Existing Project / Add Into Existing Project onto XML.
Primavera PM (XER) → Project — File, Import → Primavera PM (XER) → Project → select the file. Fields Oracle named:
- Import Action — "Double click the Import Action field to select how the project data is imported." Options Oracle named: Update Existing Project ("add any new/modified data in the XER file to an existing project"); Create New Project ("create a new project while the existing project's data remains the same"); Replace Existing Project ("delete the existing project and replace it with the project imported from the XER file"); Add Into Existing Project ("create a new WBS node in the project and import all data from the XER file under that new WBS node").
- Import To — "specify where to import the projects in the Import To field."
- Update Project Options — "Choose the data to import by modifying the layout configuration in the Update Project Options dialog box (if necessary)."
- Modify Import Configuration — "select the data you want to modify." "Select the action to perform during the import process." Delete checkbox: "remove unreferenced data (that is, data in the project you are updating but is not included in the import file) from the project." "The Delete field applies only to relationships to external projects, thresholds, activities, activity relationships, and activity resource assignments. Global data types are not affected by this setting."
- Currency — "Select the currency in which to import cost fields." "This dialog box only displays if the import file does not specify a currency, or if the currency does not match a currency defined in P6 Professional when P6 Professional is connected to a P6 Professional database and using P6 when connected to a P6 EPPM database."
XER Resource Only / Role Only do not reprint that Import Action list. Resource Only: Resource Only → file → Update Resource Options / Modify Import Configuration / optional currency. Role Only: Role Only → file → Update Role Options / Modify Import Configuration / currency. Oracle printed no Create New / Update Existing / Ignore list on those two how-tos.
Primavera P6 - (XML) — File, Import → Primavera P6 - (XML). Fields Oracle named:
- "Import all project level layouts" — "Clear the option … if you do not need them to be included with the project."
- Import Action — Update Existing Project ("add any new or modified data in the XML file to an open project"); Create New Project ("create a new project without changing existing projects"); Ignore this Project ("not import the selected projects").
- Import To — "specify where to import the project."
- Financial Period Calendar — "If you chose to create a new project, double click the Financial Period Calendar Field."
- Currencies import in — "When P6 Professional is connected to an EPPM database." Base Rate / XML Rate.
- Baselines to Import — "mark the Import checkbox next to each baseline you want to import."
- Update Project Options — templates; Search field; Edit launches Import Options.
- Import Options — Basic tab ("action to take when the same data exists in the import file and the project being updated"; same Delete sentence as XER); Advanced tab ("modify global data, including codes, UDFs, calendars, and resources"). "This tab is disabled if multiple projects are being imported. However, if you select the 'Ignore this Project' option for all projects but one, this tab is enabled."
- Save / Save As — update the template or create a new template.
XML Resources-tab actions Oracle named (Import Options): Insert New, Keep Existing, Update Existing, Do Not Import. Plus Import Resources Under. Do not invent other action tokens.
Microsoft Project — File, Import → Microsoft Project → "Select the appropriate format from the drop down menu." "If you chose MPX in the previous step, choose Project." Fields Oracle named:
- Select — "choose the files you want to import."
- password — "Type a password for any file that is password protected."
- Import Action — Create New Project ("create a new project while the existing project's data remains the same"); Add into Existing Project ("append to the selected WBS"); Replace Existing Project or Update Existing Project ("delete an existing open project without preserving information and replace it with the project imported from the Microsoft Project file"). Quote that combined Replace/Update sentence. Do not invent a separate meaning Oracle did not print.
- Import To
- template — "The template contains options for exchanging data with Microsoft Project."
- Update Existing Project only: Update Project Options → Modify → Modify Import Configuration (same Delete sentence).
Spreadsheet - (XLSX) — File, Import → Spreadsheet - (XLSX). Fields Oracle named: Browse (file); "The subject areas available are based on the export file."; checkboxes for subject areas; Import To; summary → Finish. Oracle printed no Create New / Update Existing / Ignore list on that how-to.
Sheet names Oracle printed (do not invent others): Activities = TASK; Activity Relationships = TASKPRED; Expenses = PROJCOST; Resources = RSRC; Resource Assignments = TASKRSRC. "You should not modify the sheet names. To import successfully, P6 Professional must recognize the sheet names."
Privileges Oracle names on these pages
Quote the privilege pages. Do not invent a single "Import" privilege.
- Import P6 Professional XER and MPX — "import projects, resources, and roles from XER and MPX formats using P6 Professional." "To create new projects when importing, users must also have the 'Create Project' project privilege assigned to their profile." "Users must be an Admin or Project Superuser to update a project from an XER file."
- Import XML — "import projects from P6 Professional and Microsoft Project using XML format." Same Create Project sentence for new projects. Note on that page: "For Microsoft Project imports, you can only create a new project (not update an existing one) during import. Also, P6 Professional supports imports from Microsoft Project 2002."
- Import XLSX — "import projects, resources, and roles from XLSX files into P6 Professional." XLSX how-to: "you must be logged in as a user with the Import XLSX global privilege."
- Add/Edit/Delete Microsoft and Primavera Templates — "templates that are used to import and export data to and from Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Project, Primavera XML, and Primavera XER formats."
XER project how-to (quote Oracle): "in P6 Professional only users with the Admin Superuser global security profile or Project Superuser project security profile can import projects, whereas any user with the appropriate permissions can import projects in P6."
MSP how-to (quote Oracle): "You must be an Admin superuser with all resources access to import MSP XML files." "You must have the Project Superuser security profile to use the Update Existing Project option to update existing P6 Professional projects with MSP."
Quote both the Global Privilege "MSP imports can only create a new project" / "Microsoft Project 2002" note and the MSP how-to Update Existing / 2007–2013 sentences. Do not pick a winner.
Notes Oracle printed on the project-XER how-to (do not invent others)
- "You can import an XER file from a compressed file in .zip format if the zip file contains only a single XER file." XML how-to: "You can import a compressed file in zip format if it contains a single Primavera XML file."
- "When selecting the import action, you must select the Create New Project option if you want P6 Professional to import past period actual data. If you choose any other option, past period actual values are not imported."
- "When connected to a P6 EPPM database: No risk data is imported when using XER format. Risk Categories are part of global data and are imported when using XER format." XML how-to: risk data is imported in XML (EPPM and Professional sentences).
- XLSX how-to: "P6 Professional ignores past period actual (financial period) columns when importing data from XLSX files."
Oracle printed further XER-import notes on that how-to (financial-period match, WBS Summary + Delete, external relationships, future-period buckets, shared vs personal calendars). Quote that page. Do not invent more.
EPPM — do not copy File > Import onto the web
Do not copy Professional File > Import / Action Toolbar / Alt-F, I / Import wizard format table onto EPPM web.
Oracle EPPM About Importing and Exporting Projects names import/export file formats, export settings, import templates, and project scheduled services. That page does not print File > Import or the Professional Import wizard. EPPM path Oracle printed for XER: Projects → EPS → Actions → Import/Export Projects → Import tab → Import Type Primavera XER.
EPPM XER page (quote Oracle; do not copy onto Professional): "You can import projects and baselines using P6 Professional's native Primavera XER format and create or update a project." Fields Oracle named there: Template; Import Action Create New / Update Existing; Import To (EPS or project); Baselines to import. "P6 uses the same set of import options for XER files as for XML files." "The XML import options in P6 have a few extra options when compared to the XML import options in P6 Professional (Document Categories, Document Statuses, Locations, and WP and Docs)." "the import options for XER files in P6 Professional allow less configuration than the XML import options."
Professional Import/Export file formats table: "XER does not support the import of baselines. XML supports the import of baselines." EPPM XER page names Baselines to import. Quote both. Do not pick a winner. See P6 XML vs XER and baselines.md.
EPPM About Importing format list (quote Oracle): CPP; Oracle Primavera XML or XER; Microsoft Project XML; UN/CEFACT; IPMDAR; Excel. That is the EPPM page, not the Professional Import wizard table.
EPPM scheduled import/export is Administration → Scheduled Services, not this command. See Job Services.
XER
Import is a command. It reads a project XER (or another format Oracle named). It is not an XER table.
Oracle's project XER data map TOC lists no IMPORT, IMPORTWIZARD, IMPWIZ, or IMPORTCFG table. Do not invent one.
The file File > Import reads, when the format is Primavera PM XER, is a normal Primavera PM XER (PROJECT / TASK / …). See XER Tables That Matter for a Viewer or Converter and P6 XML vs XER. This note is the wizard, not a second field catalog.
PROJECT.checkout_flag / checkout_user_id / checkout_date are Check Out status, not proof the planner used File > Import. See Check Out.
A Viewer parse of one project XER cannot reconstruct Import Action, Import To, Update Project Options, currency, or whether the planner used File > Import, Check In, command-line import, or EPPM Import/Export Projects. After it runs you may see new or changed PROJECT / TASK / … rows — that is the data, not a stored wizard row.
Microsoft Project
Desktop Project has File > Open > Browse then the Import Wizard. Microsoft: "You can import information into Project by using any entered field from another product's file format, such as Microsoft OfficeExcel, Microsoft Office Access, Extensible Markup Language (XML), comma-separated values (CSV), or tab delimited text format." "Follow the instructions in the Import Wizard." Applies to Project Online Desktop Client / Project Professional / Project Standard (page fetched).
Same product: File > New → New from Excel workbook (Project Import Wizard; new project or the project you have open).
They are not the same command. P6 File > Import starts the P6 Import wizard (formats Oracle named above). Project File > Open / New from Excel starts Project's Import Wizard (Excel / Access / XML / CSV / text). Microsoft did not print File > Import, XER, or a P6 analog. Do not invent one.
Oracle's Import wizard names Microsoft Project XML and MPX. Oracle did not name MPP as an Import wizard format. Do not claim P6 File > Import reads a native MPP. Do not claim MPXJ can write a real MPP.
Don't
- Treat File > Import as File > Export, as Send Project, as Job Services, as command-line import-as-a-service, as Check Out / Check In, or as File > Exchange Data.
- Invent an IMPORT / IMPORTWIZARD / IMPWIZ XER table, or treat checkout_flag as "the planner imported this file."
- Invent P3, MPP, UN/CEFACT, IPMDAR, or CPP as Professional Import wizard formats. Oracle's current wizard table names Primavera PM XER, Primavera P6 XML, Microsoft Project XML, MPX, and XLSX.
- Copy XML Ignore this Project onto XER, or copy XER Replace Existing Project / Add Into Existing Project onto XML. Quote the list on the how-to that names it.
- Invent importer quirks, column maps, or format behavior Oracle did not print. This note is the wizard, not XER Tables That Matter for a Viewer or Converter.
- Copy File > Import / Alt-F, I / the Professional format table onto EPPM web, or treat EPPM Import/Export Projects / Scheduled Services as this command.
- Collapse Professional "XER does not support the import of baselines" with EPPM XER Baselines to import. Quote both.
- Claim a Viewer reconstructed Import Action, Import To, or Update Project Options from an XER.
- Map this command to MSP File > Open Import Wizard / New from Excel workbook and call them the same.
- Claim MPXJ writes a real MPP.
