Job Services

Job Services is Tools > Job Services the interval scheduler; not Apply Actuals, Summarize, Schedule, or Publication

P6 EPS / Projects tree. Enterprise nodes hold projects such as EC00515.
This is the project tree. Job Services run scheduled admin jobs, not this tree.

What a planner means

Job Services is the Professional job scheduler. Oracle: "Job services let you automate certain functions in P6 Professional. You can apply actuals, run a batch report, export projects, schedule projects, and summarize projects." "Set up jobs in the Job Services dialog box by entering a job name, selecting a service type, and specifying when to run the job." Example Oracle printed: "schedule all projects in a particular division every Friday at noon."

This dialog is not Tools > Apply Actuals, Tools > Summarize, Tools > Schedule, Tools > Reports, or File > Export. Those are the commands a job can call. See Apply Actuals Posts Progress and Moves the Data Date, Summarizer Stores Rolled-Up EPS Totals; It, Schedule Log, Professional Reports Are a Stored Definition, Not a Layout. It is not Publication Services / Enable Publication. See Publication. It is not File > Send Project (email an XER). It is not the command-line "export projects as a service" path.

Oracle Tools Menu: Tools > Job Services. "This command appears only when P6 Professional is connected to a P6 Professional database." "Opens the Job Services dialog box. In this dialog box, you can create jobs and schedule them to run automatically on any number of projects or EPS nodes at a specified time." Enabled when "All." Corresponding toolbar: Tools Toolbar. How-to: Tools, Job Services.

Oracle Tools Toolbar: "This icon appears only when P6 Professional is connected to a P6 Professional database. Opens the Job Services dialog box." Menu command: Tools > Job Services. The icon does not display by default.

Administer Job Services is a privilege, not a menu. Oracle Global Privilege Definitions: Administer Job Services — "Determines whether the profile will enable users to set up the Apply Actuals, Batch Reports, Export, Schedule, and Summarize services to run at specific time intervals using the Job Service."

Oracle: "The Job Service Server component must be installed to use the Job Services feature. Also, using the Job Services feature requires the appropriate level of security. If a job does not run as scheduled, check with your system administrator."

Oracle: Job Services may be distributed or non-distributed. Distributed: Job Service on multiple machines; one machine is the Controller; "The Controller determines which servers run which jobs"; "multiple jobs to run concurrently on separate Job Service machines" — "especially useful when summarizing large projects." Non-distributed: "installed on a single machine that processes jobs in the order specified."

Job Status is a different command. Oracle Tools Menu: Tools > Job Status — "This command appears only when P6 Professional is connected to a P6 EPPM database." "Opens the Job Status dialog box. In this dialog box, you can view the status of all jobs submitted in P6 EPPM, such as apply actuals or summarize jobs that were run from P6 Professional and sent to run as an ASAP service." Job Status dialog title: (P6 EPPM Only). Oracle: "The list does not include recurring jobs as defined on the Scheduled Services page in P6." Tools Toolbar Job Status row fetched says the icon "appears only when P6 Professional is connected to a P6 Professional database" and then describes EPPM ASAP jobs. Quote both. Do not pick a winner. Do not treat Job Status as this dialog.

Professional dialog fields Oracle names

Oracle Job Services dialog box: "Use the Job Services dialog box to automatically run any number of jobs on multiple projects/EPS nodes at a specified time. Defining a job service requires the appropriate access rights."

Fields Oracle named on that page (quote Oracle):

  • Job # — "A reference number associated with each job." Schedule-as-a-service how-to: "Specify a number in the Job # field to indicate the sequence in which the service should be performed, if more than one service is listed." Quote both. Do not collapse them.
  • Job Name — "Enter a brief description of the job. You can enter 100 characters."
  • Status — "Choose Enabled for jobs that you want to run at a designated date and time; choose Disabled to turn off any job that you do not want to run."
  • Service Type — "Specifies the job type: Apply Actuals, Batch Reports, Export, Schedule, or Summarize. You cannot change the job service type once a project/EPS node is assigned in the Job Options tab."
  • Last Run — "Displays the last date and time that the job was run."
  • Next Run — "Displays the next scheduled date and time for the job."

Buttons Oracle named: Add ("Adds a new job service."); Delete ("Removes the selected job service.").

Tabs Oracle named:

  • Job Details tab - Job Services dialog box
  • Job Options tab - Job Services dialog box

Job types Oracle lists

Oracle Service Type / Configure a job service: Apply Actuals, Batch Reports, Export, Schedule, Summarize. Do not invent Level, Import, Publish, Project Checker, or Send to Schedule Sheet on this dialog. Those names are EPPM Scheduled Services (below).

Interval / schedule fields Oracle names

Oracle Job Details tab fields (quote Oracle):

  • Application User Login Name — "Lists the login name for the user running the job." Configure: "The Application User Login Name field displays the user login name associated with this job. Be sure that this user has appropriate rights to perform the job."
  • Last run status — "Lists the results of the job; the status message “OK” indicates that the job ran without errors." Configure: Last Run Status — "shows a status message from the last job run. The message "OK" displays if the job ran without errors." Quote both Last run status and Last Run Status.
  • Run Job — "Specify a specific date and time or choose to run the job immediately after a previous job number."
  • Log to file — "Mark this checkbox to send details about the run status to an output file. Enter a location for the file or accept the default. Specify whether the log file should be generated as HTML." Configure: Log to File. Quote both.

Configure Run Job sentence (quote Oracle; do not invent extra intervals): "In the Run Job field, choose when to run the job, such as every week/2weeks/month at a specific time, or immediately after a previous job has completed."

Schedule project data as a service Run Job sentence (quote Oracle): "every day at a specific time, or weekly, every two weeks, or monthly on a day and time you specify."

Quote all three Run Job wordings. Do not invent hourly, yearly, or a "daily" token Oracle did not print on the dialog-box page.

Job Options fields Oracle names

Oracle Job Options tab: "Use the Job Options tab to list the projects/EPS nodes you want to run the job service for. All projects in the EPS are listed, regardless of the current portfolio you have open."

  • Assign — "Click to select projects/EPS nodes to be included in the job service."
  • Remove — "Click to remove projects/EPS nodes from the job service."
  • New Data Date — "(For Apply Actuals only) Select the date up to which you want to apply the default project's actuals. Click to select a new date."
  • Batch Report — "(For Batch Reports only) Click to select the batch report you want the job service to run. You must select a batch report to properly add the Batch Reports job service."
  • Send Report To — "(For Batch Reports only) Click to specify where to send the output of the batch report."
  • Export To — "(For Export only) Click to specify the name and location for the export file."
  • Default Project — "(For Schedule only) If multiple projects are open, select which projects scheduling options to use when you schedule."

Configure a job service also names Default Project on Apply Actuals jobs: "Mark the checkbox for the project you want to use as the Default Project." Same sentence on Schedule jobs. Job Options tab printed Default Project as (For Schedule only). Quote both. Do not pick a winner.

Configure notes Oracle printed (quote Oracle):

  • "When you assign EPS nodes to the job list in the Job Options tab, this automatically includes all child EPS nodes and projects in the job list."
  • Apply Actuals: "A new data date is used for all projects when actuals are applied." "If the project you want to select as the default is not listed because it is part of an EPS node you have listed, you must add the project separately to the list."
  • "For Apply Actuals jobs, the activity remaining duration is calculated based on the setting in the Apply Actuals dialog box. The setting for the default project is used for all projects in the job service."
  • "For Batch Reports jobs, only one batch report can be run. Add a separate job service for each batch report you want to run." "Project batch reports will only run for the project to which they are assigned."

Export format. Oracle Job Options names Export To (name and location). That page does not print a format picker. Oracle Import/Export file formats table Job Services row: "XER supports scheduling exports on a regular basis as services. XML does not." File > Export to XER tip: "When connected to a P6 Professional database: You can set up a job service to export your projects at a specified time." Do not invent that this dialog exports P6 XML. Command-line "export projects in XER format as a service" is a different path (File > Export related topic). Do not treat it as Tools > Job Services.

EPPM — Scheduled Services, not Tools > Job Services

Do not copy Tools > Job Services onto EPPM. Do not copy EPPM types onto this dialog.

Oracle About Project Scheduled Services: "Project Scheduled Services runs a service at the time and frequency that you select for the projects, EPS nodes, project code values, and portfolios that you choose." "You can run a scheduled service against both filtered and manually created portfolios." Types Oracle listed on that page: apply actuals, export (XER or XML), import (XER or XML), level, project checker, publish, schedule, summarize, and send to schedule sheet.

Oracle Project Scheduled Services Page Getting Here: Administration → Scheduled Services → Project. Add names Oracle printed there: Apply Actuals; Export Primavera XER; Export Primavera XML; Import Primavera XER (On-premises only); Import Primavera XML (On-premises only); Level; Project Checker; Publish; Schedule; Summarize; Send to Schedule Sheet. Professional Service Type does not list Import, Level, Project Checker, Publish, or Send to Schedule Sheet. EPPM About / Add list does not list Batch Reports. Do not invent either onto the other.

EPPM interval fields Oracle named on Service Settings (do not copy these names onto Professional Job Details): Run Service ("the interval by which the service is automatically run"; After Previous Service starts "immediately after the previous service has finished"); On (Weekly); On the (Every Two Weeks or Monthly); Start Time. Professional pages fetched name Run Job, not Run Service.

EPPM Project Settings names Oracle printed that Professional Job Options did not print: Change Data Date (Use project's current Data Date + n days; Use Service's run time) — "only available for Apply Actuals, Level, and Schedule services"; Use scheduling settings from — "only available for schedule services." Do not copy them onto Tools > Job Services.

Professional connected to an EPPM database: Tools > Job Services does not appear (Tools Menu). Tools > Apply Actuals / Summarize from that client queue as ASAP and show on Job Status — that is not this dialog. See Summarizer Stores Rolled-Up EPS Totals; It, Apply Actuals Posts Progress and Moves the Data Date.

Do not treat Primavera Cloud or Unifier schedule-sheet integration as this object. EPPM Service Settings Enable email notifications / Recipients are "only available for Schedule Sheet integration services."

XER

Job Services is a scheduler dialog. Oracle's project XER data map TOC lists no JOBSERV, JOB, JOBSERVICE, or JOBS table. Do not invent one.

APPLYACTOPTIONS is Apply Actual Options. That is not this dialog. See Apply Actuals Posts Progress and Moves the Data Date.

A Viewer parse of a project XER cannot reconstruct the planner's Job Services list. After a job runs you may see dates, units, summary flags, or an XER file on disk — those are the commands, not a stored job row.

Microsoft Project

Desktop Project has no Job Services dialog, no Administer Job Services privilege, and no scheduled Apply Actuals / Batch Reports / Export / Schedule / Summarize job list. Microsoft documents Auto_Open macros that run when a plan opens. That is not this object. Do not map them. Do not invent a desktop Project job scheduler. Do not claim MPXJ can write a real MPP.

Don't

  • Treat Job Services as Apply Actuals, Summarize, Schedule, Batch Reports, File > Export, Publication, or those commands.
  • Invent a job type Oracle did not print on Professional Service Type (Apply Actuals, Batch Reports, Export, Schedule, Summarize).
  • Copy EPPM Scheduled Services types (Import, Level, Project Checker, Publish, Send to Schedule Sheet, export XML) onto Tools > Job Services.
  • Copy Tools > Job Services onto EPPM Administration → Scheduled Services.
  • Treat Job Status (EPPM ASAP) as this dialog, or treat recurring Scheduled Services as Job Status (Oracle: Job Status "does not include recurring jobs").
  • Treat Administer Job Services as a menu (it is a privilege).
  • Treat File > Send Project, or command-line export-as-a-service, as this dialog.
  • Invent a JOBSERV / JOB / JOBSERVICE XER table, or treat APPLYACTOPTIONS as this dialog.
  • Claim a Viewer reconstructed Job Services from a project XER.
  • Map this object to MSP Auto_Open / VBA / Task Scheduler and call them the same.
  • Claim MPXJ writes a real MPP.
