Resources & Cost

Primary Resource

Primary resource is RSRC; owner is a user (TASKUSER); not the same

P6 General tab. Primary Resource sits beside WBS and Responsible Manager. Activity Type is Task Dependent.
Primary Resource is a General-tab field. It is not Activity Owner and not the Resources tab list.

What a planner means

Primary resource is the person primarily responsible for performing or overseeing the work. Oracle: the first resource you assign to an activity is automatically the primary resource. It is a resource (RSRC). You can change it. A milestone can have a primary resource (and expenses).

Activity owner is a user responsible for the activity โ€” typically for status, not for doing the units. Oracle: used when resource assignments are not used for reporting, or when one person reports for a crew (foreman reports for the crew). The owner needs Projects module access and the required privileges to update status.

They can both exist on the same activity. If the project lets Team Member update as owner and as primary resource, and one person is both, Oracle Primavera Cloud / Team Member: the activity can appear twice on My Activities.

Expected Finish: only the primary resource can edit it once the activity has started. See Expected Finish (Not Remaining Finish, Not a Constraint).

Neither one is OBS Responsible Manager, and neither is a role.

TASK.rsrc_id is not the assignments table. Do not treat every TASKRSRC row as primary.

Microsoft Project

Desktop Project has no activity owner and no primary-resource flag. Assignments are resources on tasks. Project Online has assignment-owner / timesheet concepts that are not MSPDI and not this pair. Do not map TASK.rsrc_id to the first Resource Name and call it Owner.

Don't

  • Treat activity owner as a resource, or primary resource as a user login.
  • Treat TASK.rsrc_id as TASKRSRC (all assignments) or as OBS.
  • Invent an owner from the primary resource, or a primary resource from TASKUSER.
  • Map owner to MSP Resource Name.
