Dates & Status
Remaining Duration vs Remaining Finish (Not the Same Object)
Remaining duration is hours; Remaining Finish is a date

Remaining duration
A length of working time. Oracle: total working time from remaining start to remaining finish, using the activity calendar. Before start = planned duration. After finish = 0. XER: TASK.remain_drtn_hr_cnt (hours). See P6 Remaining Duration vs Percent Complete.
Remaining Finish (Remaining Early Finish)
A date. Oracle Professional: “The earliest possible date the remaining work for the activity is scheduled to finish.” Calculated by the scheduler; can be typed; overwritten when you schedule. Before start = Planned Finish. After finish = blank.
XER: TASK.reend_date (Remaining Early Finish). Remaining Early Start is restart_date.
Unifier/EVM (same product family): Remaining Early Finish is calculated by adding remaining duration to remaining early start. After complete, both remaining dates blank.
Professional also: once started, Remaining Start = Data Date (unless you are in a leveling/preserve-early-dates case). Early Finish equals Remaining Finish unless you preserve scheduled early dates during leveling.
Related, not equal
| Remaining duration | Remaining Finish | |
|---|---|---|
| Kind | Hours of calendar work | A clock date |
| Blank when complete | 0 hours | blank date |
| Typing it | Changes Duration % Complete pair | Scheduler will overwrite on the next Calculate schedule |
| Calendar | Duration is measured on the activity calendar | Date is placed by walking that duration from remaining start |
Expected Finish is a third object (typed forecast). Must Finish By is a project constraint. Neither is Remaining Finish.
Microsoft Project
Finish / Remaining Finish in Project is the scheduled finish. Remaining Duration is Duration − Actual Duration. Do not treat P6 Remaining Finish as remaining duration, or write a remaining-finish date into MSPDI Duration. Walking remaining hours across the activity calendar is how you get the date — do not add 8h × N calendar days.
