What a planner means

Chart Font and Colors (Oracle: the Chart Font & Colors dialog; View menu prints Chart Font and Colors) is a layout setting that formats text, background color, and box color in a chart view. Oracle View menu: "Enables you to customize fonts and colors in chart views. This command is disabled when you display a table or Gantt Chart in the active window." Enabled for Projects, Resources, Work Breakdown Structure. Corresponding toolbar: None. It is not Table Font and Row (Table Font and Row — table text, background color, and row height; enabled for All), not Timescale Font & Color (Timescale — "timescale and column headings"), not Group and Sort Font & Color (Group and Sort — group-band appearance), not Chart Box Template (which fields appear in the boxes), not Activity Network Font & Colors (Activity Network — same three button names, different menu), not Visualizer (Visualizer), not Arrange Children / Align Children (box placement), and not the PROJWBS / PROJECT / RSRC values a box can display. Changing Chart Font and Colors does not add or delete WBS nodes, projects, or resources.

Professional — Oracle names these menus:

  • View, Chart Font and Colors (Change the work breakdown structure chart display)
  • Display Options bar → Chart Font and Colors (Change the OBS chart display; View the WBS tip: "You can also select the same View commands by clicking the Display Options bar.")
  • View menu Chart Font and Colors: "Enables you to customize fonts and colors in chart views. This command is disabled when you display a table or Gantt Chart in the active window." Enabled for Projects, Resources, Work Breakdown Structure. Corresponding toolbar: None.

Oracle names these Chart Font & Colors dialog fields:

  • Font — "Changes the appearance of text in your display." WBS how-to: "To change the appearance of text, click Font, then select a new font."
  • Back Color — "Changes your display's background color." WBS how-to: "To change the display's background color, click Back Color, then select a new color."
  • Box Color — "Changes the color of boxes in your display." WBS how-to: "To change the WBS box color, click Box Color, then select a new color." OBS how-to: "To change the display's OBS box color, click Box Color, then select a new color."
  • Apply — "Applies your changes without closing this dialog box."

The dialog and how-to pages fetched do not print a font-family or size list, a color token list, a per-box color, a Default button, a toolbar icon, or that this Font formats table rows or timescale headings. Do not invent them.

WBS chart — Oracle Change the work breakdown structure chart display: Project, WBS, then View, Show on Top, Chart View, then View, Chart Font and Colors. Font; Back Color; Box Color. Tip: "To change the displayed information, choose View, Chart Box Template, then an information type." View the WBS: "To view the WBS as a graphical chart, choose View, Show on Top, Chart View." "To view the WBS as a table in column format, choose View, Show on Top, Table." "To view the WBS as a table in a column format with a corresponding Bar Chart, choose View, Show on Top, Gantt Chart." Chart Font and Colors is the chart command. Table Font and Row is the table command.

Projects chart — Oracle Projects window: "Use the Layout Options bar, View menu on the Menu bar, and Top Layout toolbar to choose the layouts you want to display in the top layout. In the top layout, you can display the Project Table, a project chart view, or a project Gantt Chart." View menu enables Chart Font and Colors when the active window is Projects (and the display is a chart view, not table or Gantt). Top Layout toolbar: "Shows or hides a chart view." Enabled for Projects, Resources, WBS. Corresponding menu: View > Show on Top > Chart View. The pages fetched do not print a separate "Change the project chart display" field list. Do not invent Projects-only fields.

Resources chart — Oracle Resources window: "In the Resources window, you can view the resource hierarchy as a table or as a chart." "Use the Display Options bar, the View menu on the Menu bar, or the Top Layout toolbar to show or hide a table view or chart view in the window." "You can customize columns, fonts, and colors, and you can group, sort, and filter resources." View menu enables Chart Font and Colors when the active window is Resources (chart view, not table). The pages fetched do not print a separate "Change the resource chart display" field list. Do not invent Resources-only fields.

OBS chart — Oracle Change the OBS chart display: Enterprise, OBS, then Display Options bar → Chart Font and Colors. Font; Back Color; Box Color. Tip: "To change the displayed information, click the Display Options bar, choose Chart Box Template, then select Customize." The View menu enable list for Chart Font and Colors is Projects, Resources, Work Breakdown Structure — it does not print OBS. OBS uses the Display Options bar on the pages fetched. Do not copy View > Chart Font and Colors onto OBS as if Oracle printed that menu path there.

Oracle Using the Status Bar and Layout Options bar: "You can also view hierarchical information, such as the work breakdown structure, in table (list) or chart view (hierarchy) format." "When you view data in chart view format, you can display up to 2,000 boxes." That is a chart-view limit, not a Chart Font and Colors field.

Not these other commands

  • Table Font and Row — View menu: "Opens the Table, Font and Row dialog box." "The available options vary for each window." Enabled for All. Layout toolbar icon. Font / Color / row height / Show Icons. That is a table command. See Table Font and Row.
  • Timescale Font & Color — "The font style, size, and color settings for the timescale and column headings." See Timescale.
  • Group and Sort Font & Color — Oracle Change group row fonts and colors: View, Group and Sort; "Double-click the Font & Color cell you want to change." That is the Group and Sort dialog. See Group and Sort.
  • Chart Box Template — View menu: "Enables you to apply an existing chart box template to the current layout, or customize your own. This command is disabled when you display a table or Gantt Chart in the active window." Enabled for Projects, Resources, Work Breakdown Structure. Corresponding toolbar: Top Layout Toolbar. That is which fields appear in the boxes, not Font / Back Color / Box Color.
  • Arrange Children — "Enables you to arrange children horizontally or vertically in chart views. This command is disabled when you display a table or Gantt Chart in the active window." Enabled for Projects, Resources, Work Breakdown Structure.
  • Align Children — "Aligns children to the left, right, or center in chart views. This command is disabled when you display a table or Gantt Chart in the active window." Enabled for Projects, Resources, Work Breakdown Structure.
  • Activity Network Font & Colors — Oracle Change activity box fonts and colors: View, Activity Network, Activity Network Options (or Layout Options bar → Activity Network, Activity Network Options) → Activity Box Template tab → Font & Colors. Then Font, Back Color, Box Color, Apply. Same three button names. That is the Activities Activity Network, not this View > Chart Font and Colors command (disabled for table or Gantt; enabled for Projects / Resources / WBS). See Activity Network.
  • Visualizer — Tools > Visualizer; layouts export as .vlf. See Visualizer.
  • Zoom to Best Fit — Display toolbar: "Re-sizes chart views to fit the entire chart into the visible area. This icon is enabled when you display a chart view in the active window." Corresponding menu: View > Zoom > Zoom to Best Fit. That is zoom, not font or color.

The Professional Chart Font and Colors pages fetched do not print Manage Views, a Chart Font tab, View menu → Chart Font as an EPPM-style Customize View, a per-level box color, or that enabling Chart Font and Colors is a named .plf field. Do not invent them. Layouts travel as .plf. See Filters and Layouts Are a View, Not the Schedule.

EPPM web — Manage Views / Customize View tabs Oracle named: Columns, Filtering, Grouping, Sorting, Bars, Gantt, Activity Network, Access. Configuring Activity Views lists those tabs. It does not print Chart Font and Colors, Font / Back Color / Box Color, View > Show on Top > Chart View, or Chart Box Template.

Oracle Working with WBS Elements is add / copy / paste / cut / delete / merge WBS. That page does not print Chart View, Chart Font and Colors, Font, Back Color, or Box Color.

Those EPPM pages do not print View > Chart Font and Colors, Display Options bar → Chart Font and Colors, Font / Back Color / Box Color, Apply, Chart Box Template, Arrange Children, or Align Children. Do not copy those Professional menus onto EPPM.

XER

Chart Font and Colors (Font, Back Color, Box Color, Apply) is a layout setting. Oracle's project XER data map TOC lists no CHARTFONT, CHART_FONT, BOXCOLOR, FONT, LAYOUT, or VIEW table. Do not invent one. Layouts travel as .plf, not in a project XER. See Filters and Layouts Are a View, Not the Schedule.

Oracle did not name an XER column for chart font, background color, or box color.

What a box can display is not this dialog:

A Viewer parse of one XER cannot reconstruct the planner's Chart Font and Colors.

Microsoft Project

Desktop Project has a Network Diagram and Text Styles. They are not the same object as P6 Chart Font and Colors.

Microsoft Create a Network Diagram: View > Network Diagram. "Boxes (or nodes) represent tasks, and dependencies show up as lines that connect those boxes." Format > Box Styles: "In the Style settings for list, select the task that you want to change." "Under Border, choose the shape, color, width, and gridline options to create the look you want." Data template picks "what kind of task information to show." Format > Layout sets box arrangement, alignment, spacing, height, and width. That is a task-dependency diagram. It is closer to P6 Activity Network than to Projects / Resources / WBS Chart View.

Microsoft Change the font for all text using styles: Format > Text Styles. Item to Change: All, or "the type of item" for "just certain tasks." "Repeat this process for other views." "Text styles can't be changed using Resource Form, Sprint Planning Board, Task Form, Task Board, or Network diagram views."

Microsoft WBS codes are outline numbers on tasks (Project > WBS > Define Code). That is not a WBS org-chart view.

The pages fetched do not print a Microsoft Project WBS chart, EPS chart, or resource-hierarchy chart with Font / Back Color / Box Color. Do not invent one. Do not map P6 Chart Font and Colors (chart-view Font / Back Color / Box Color; disabled for table or Gantt; Projects / Resources / WBS; .plf) to MSP Format > Box Styles or Format > Text Styles and call them the same command. Do not claim MPXJ can write a real MPP.

Don't

  • Treat Chart Font and Colors as Table Font and Row, as Timescale Font & Color, as Group and Sort Font & Color, as Chart Box Template, as Activity Network Font & Colors, as Visualizer, as Arrange Children / Align Children, or as the PROJWBS / PROJECT / RSRC values a box can display.
  • Treat this command as enabled on a table or Gantt Chart.
  • Treat View > Chart Font and Colors (Projects / Resources / WBS) as the OBS Display Options bar path, or copy one menu path onto the other.
  • Treat Activity Network Options → Font & Colors (same three button names) as this View menu command.
  • Invent a CHARTFONT / CHART_FONT / BOXCOLOR / FONT / LAYOUT / VIEW XER table, or treat any PROJWBS / PROJECT / RSRC / OBS column as the chart appearance.
  • Treat EPPM Customize View (Columns / Filtering / Grouping / Sorting / Bars / Gantt / Activity Network / Access) or Working with WBS Elements (add / copy / paste / delete) as the Professional View > Chart Font and Colors dialog.
  • Copy Professional View > Chart Font and Colors / Font / Back Color / Box Color / Chart Box Template onto EPPM as if Oracle printed those menus there.
  • Invent a font-family or size list, a color token list, a per-box color, a Default button, or a Chart Font toolbar icon (View menu corresponding toolbar is None).
  • Map this object to MSP Format > Box Styles or Format > Text Styles and call them the same.
  • Claim MPXJ writes a real MPP.
  • Claim a Viewer reconstructed the planner's Chart Font and Colors from an XER.
