In Primavera P6

Edit Activity

Edit Activity is Define general activity information and Activity Table double-click; not Add Activity

P6 General tab. Activity Type, Duration Type, % Complete Type, Activity Calendar, WBS, Responsible Manager, and Primary Resource.
General-tab fields are edited here. Edit Activity is not Add Activity.

What a planner means

Edit Activity is Oracle Define general activity information and/or Change activity information in the Activity Table. Oracle does not print a menu item named Edit Activity. It is a command. It is not stored data. It is not Add Activity, not Change an activity's WBS assignment, not Fill Down, not Define activity types / duration types / percent complete types, not Assign a calendar to an activity, not Enter activity durations / constraints / start and finish dates, not Change an activity's duration or start and finish dates in the Gantt Chart, not Customize Activity Details, not Columns, not Global Change, not EPPM Configuring General Activity Information copied onto Professional, and not Primavera Cloud Activities-page edit.

The two how-tos are different surfaces. Do not collapse them.

Oracle Define general activity information (Professional):

  1. "Choose Project, Activities, then select the activity whose general information you want to define."
  2. "Display Activity Details, then click each tab in Activity Details and enter the corresponding information."

Tip Oracle printed: "To specify which Activity Details you want to display and their order, click the Layout Options bar, then choose Bottom Layout Options."

Quote those two steps and that tip. That how-to fetched prints no field catalog (no Activity ID, Activity Name, Activity Type, Duration Type, % Complete Type, calendar, WBS, status, dates, or constraint list). Do not invent one. Do not invent that it printed Edit, Add, double-click, or Save.

Oracle Change activity information in the Activity Table (Professional):

"To change activity information, double-click the information you want to change."

Note: "You may need the required security privileges to edit certain activity information."

Quote that sentence and that note. That how-to fetched prints no field catalog and no list of which columns can be double-clicked. Do not invent one. Do not invent that it printed Display Activity Details, click each tab, or Layout Options bar.

Activities window: "Use Activity Details or the Activity Table to define general and detailed information for each activity." That sentence names both surfaces. It is not a third how-to. "You need the Edit Activity ID privilege to modify the Activity ID." That is modify, not a sentence either Edit how-to printed. Do not invent that Define general or Change in the Activity Table printed Edit Activity ID.

Activity Details is the Define-general surface, not a field list on that how-to. Oracle Activity Details: "Use the Activity Details to view and edit detailed information about the selected activity. The Activity Details appear in the Activities window." Tabs that page lists as available: General; Status; Resources; Predecessors; Successors; Codes; Tasks; Discussion; Notebook; Steps; Feedback; WPS & Docs; Expenses; Summary; Relationships; "When connected to a P6 Professional database: Risks"; UDFs. Related-topics also names WPs & Docs and Update History. Quote WPS & Docs (available list) and WPs & Docs (related). Do not collapse them. Do not invent that the available list printed Update History. Related topics mark Tasks tab as P6 EPPM Only. Top-of-each-tab fields that page names: Previous; Next; Activity ("The selected activity's ID. You can type a new ID."); Activity Name ("The selected activity's name. You can type a new name."); Project ("The ID for the selected activity's project."). The Define how-to fetched does not print those tab or top-of-tab labels. Do not invent that it did.

General tab is one Activity Details tab, not the Define how-to. Oracle General tab - Activity Details purpose sentence: "Use the General tab to define general information for the selected activity, including the activity's duration type, activity type, percent complete type, priority level, assigned work breakdown structure (WBS) element, and cost account." Fields that page names: Activity Type; Duration Type; % Complete Type; Activity Calendar; WBS; Responsible Manager; Primary Resource. The purpose sentence also names priority level and cost account. That page fetched does not print those two as labeled fields. Do not invent that it did. The Define how-to fetched does not print this field list. See P6 Activity Types (Six) — Not MSP Task Type and P6 Duration Types (Four) vs Project Task Types (Three).

Display Activity Details is a different how-to. Oracle Display window details: "To display details for a window, such as Projects or Activities, choose View, Show on Bottom, Details, or click on the Bottom Layout toolbar." Activities window: "To show or hide Activity Details, click the Layout Options bar, then choose Activity Details, or click on the Bottom Layout toolbar." View activity relationships: Layout Options bar → Show on Bottom, Activity Details. Quote those. The Define how-to says Display Activity Details and does not print View, Show on Bottom, Details / Layout Options bar Activity Details / Bottom Layout toolbar. Do not invent that it did. Do not collapse those show paths.

Customize Activity Details is a different how-to. Oracle Customize Activity Details: "With Activity Details displayed in the Activities window, choose View, Bottom Layout Options." Available Tabs / Display Tabs; OK / Apply. Activity Details: "click the Display Options bar, then choose Bottom Layout Options, or right-click in the Activity Details tab area and choose Customize Activity Details." View Menu: Bottom Layout Options — "Enables you to customize the tabs that display in Activity Details." Enabled when "Activities." Corresponding toolbar: None. Quote Layout Options bar, then choose Bottom Layout Options (Define tip), Display Options bar / Customize Activity Details (Activity Details page), and View, Bottom Layout Options (Customize how-to / View Menu). Do not collapse them. Customize does not edit activity fields.

Add Activity is a different command. Edit > Add of a new TASK. The Add how-tos do not print Display Activity Details or double-click. See Add Activity.

Change an activity's WBS assignment is a different command. Activity Details General tab → WBS field → Select. That how-to does not say click each tab or double-click the Activity Table. See Change an Activity's WBS Assignment.

Fill Down is a different command. Edit > Fill Down copies first-selected-row text down a column. It is not double-click of one cell. See Fill Down Copies First-Selected-Row Text Down a Table Column.

Define activity types / Define activity duration types / Define activity percent complete types / Define milestones / Assign a calendar to an activity are different how-tos. Each is Project, Activities → select → Display Activity Details → General tab, then one field (Activity Type; Duration Type; percent complete type; Start Milestone or Finish Milestone; Activity Calendar → Select). They are not "click each tab" and not Activity Table double-click.

Enter activity durations / Enter activity constraints / Enter activity start and finish dates are different how-tos. Each opens Activity Details Status tab. They are not the Define-general "click each tab" sentence and not Activity Table double-click. See P6 Activity Constraints (Task.cstr_type), P6 Remaining Duration vs Percent Complete, Actual Start/Finish Are Dates; Remaining Duration.

Change an activity's duration in the Gantt Chart / Change an activity's start and finish dates in the Gantt Chart are different commands. Drag the bar (double-ended arrow = duration; hand pointer = start and finish). Those how-tos do not print Display Activity Details or Activity Table double-click.

Columns is a different command. View > Columns picks which fields appear. It does not edit values. See Columns.

Global Change is a different command. Tools > Global Change If/Then. See Global Change.

Add/Edit Activities Except Relationships privilege (Professional project profile): "Determines whether the profile will enable users to create and modify all activity information in projects, except activity relationships. To modify activity IDs, users must also have the 'Edit Activity ID' project privilege assigned to their profile." The Edit how-tos fetched print required security privileges (Table) and do not name this privilege. Do not invent that they did. The Professional privilege page fetched does not print activity owner / status reviewer / Team Member work-distribution sentences. Do not copy those EPPM extras onto Professional Edit.

Professional vs EPPM

Professional — the two how-tos above. Do not invent a printed item titled Edit Activity.

EPPM web — do not copy Professional Project, Activities / Display Activity Details / click each tab / Layout Options bar Bottom Layout Options / Activity Table double-click onto EPPM.

Oracle EPPM Configuring General Activity Information: "You can configure some of the general information for activities, including Activity Type, Duration Type, and Percent Complete Type."

Note: "If P6 is integrated with Oracle Primavera Cloud for task integration, do not change the Activity IDs of activities in integrated projects."

  1. "On the Navigation Menu, expand Projects and click Activities."
  2. "On the Activities page, select an activity and click the General detail window."
  3. "In the General detail window, configure the activity details to represent the information you want to display for that activity."
  4. "Click Save."

That how-to fetched prints Activity Type, Duration Type, and Percent Complete Type in the purpose sentence, and Save. It does not print Display Activity Details, click each tab, Layout Options bar, or double-click. Do not invent that Professional Define general printed Save or those three type names.

Oracle EPPM General Detail Window of the Activities Page fields: ID/Code; Project ID; Name; WBS; Activity Type; Duration Type; Percent Complete Type; Location; Activity Owner; Calendar. Getting Here: Projects → Activities → select an activity → General detail window. Do not copy that field list onto Professional Define general or General tab. Professional General tab fetched does not print ID/Code, Location, or Activity Owner.

Oracle EPPM Working with Activities: Grid — "You can select activities and update them within the grid or on the detail windows." That page fetched does not print double-click, Display Activity Details, or Save.

Oracle EPPM Creating, Modifying, Saving, and Deleting Data: "click in a field on a page or double-click in a table cell to edit or remove a value." "Once you select save, changes made will cascade through P6 automatically." That is a general data page, not Configuring General Activity Information and not Professional Change activity information in the Activity Table. Do not copy its Save sentence onto Professional.

Oracle EPPM About the Activity Table and Grid View fetched does not print double-click, Fill Down, Display Activity Details, or Save.

EPPM Add/Edit Activities Except Relationships: same "create and modify all activity information in projects, except activity relationships" sentence as Professional, plus EPPM-only: "Users assigned a profile with this privilege can also designate another user as an activity owner and be assigned as a status reviewer for reviewing status updates from P6 Team Member interface users. Users assigned Team Member work distribution filters must have this privilege assigned." Quote those extras on EPPM only.

Primavera Cloud — Working with the Activities Page: Detail Windows "Modify details for the selected activity"; "Changes made on the Activities page are saved automatically"; find and replace on string fields. That is a different product. Do not copy auto-save or find and replace onto P6 Professional or EPPM. The P6 Edit how-tos fetched do not print auto-save.

XER

The command is not an XER table. After it runs you see changed TASK fields (and any assignment / code / notebook / step rows the planner edited on other Activity Details tabs). Oracle’s project XER map TOC has no EDITACTIVITY / EDITACT / EDIT_ACTIVITY / DEFINEGENERAL / CHANGEACTIVITY / CHANGEACT table. Do not invent a command %T. Do not treat a changed TASK row as “the planner used Define general activity information” or “the planner double-clicked the Activity Table.” A Viewer cannot tell this command from Add-then-type, Fill Down, Global Change, import, Gantt drag, Change WBS, or EPPM General detail window Save.

TASK is the activity. Columns that match names Oracle used on related pages (Oracle XER labels): task_code (Activity ID), task_name (Activity Name), task_type (Activity Type), wbs_id (WBS), clndr_id (Calendar), duration_type (Duration Type), complete_pct_type (Percent Complete Type). The two Edit how-tos fetched do not print those column names. See P6 Activity Types (Six) — Not MSP Task Type.

Microsoft Project

Desktop Project Task Information is a dialog. Microsoft: View > Gantt Chart → "Double-click the Task Name field for the task you want to change" (then Predecessors tab to change a link). "To open the Task Information dialog box, double-click the name of the task." Task tab, Properties group → Information. Keyboard: Shift+F2 = "Display task information." Sheet edit: F2 = "Activate the entry bar to edit text in a field." VBA InformationDialog task tabs: pjTaskGeneralTab, pjTaskPredecessorsTab, pjTaskResourcesTab, pjTaskAdvancedTab, pjTaskNotesTab. Microsoft names General tab Priority; Advanced tab Effort driven. Team Planner: double-click the task "to change the name of the task or other properties (such as constraint type outline codes, deadline dates, or task types)."

They are not the same command. P6 Edit Activity is Define general (Activity Details click each tab) and/or Activity Table double-click. Project Task Information is a five-tab dialog (General / Predecessors / Resources / Advanced / Notes). Microsoft Type is Fixed Units / Duration / Work, not P6 Activity Type. Microsoft WBS is a code on the task, not TASK.wbs_id. Do not map P6 Edit Activity to MSP Task Information / Shift+F2 / F2 entry bar / sheet-cell edit as the same command. Do not claim MPXJ writes a real MPP.

Don't

  • Treat Edit Activity as Add Activity, Change an activity's WBS assignment, Fill Down, Define activity types / duration types / percent complete types, Define milestones, Assign a calendar, Enter durations / constraints / start and finish dates, Gantt-bar duration or date drag, Customize Activity Details, Columns, Global Change, EPPM Configuring General Activity Information copied onto Professional, or Cloud Activities-page edit.
  • Invent a Professional menu named Edit Activity. Oracle printed Define general activity information and Change activity information in the Activity Table.
  • Collapse Define general Display Activity Details / click each tab onto Change in the Activity Table double-click.
  • Invent a field catalog on either Edit how-to. Those pages did not print one.
  • Copy Activity Details tab / top-of-tab labels or General-tab fields onto the Define how-to as if that how-to printed them.
  • Collapse Layout Options bar → Bottom Layout Options (Define tip), Display Options bar / Customize Activity Details (Activity Details page), and View, Bottom Layout Options (Customize how-to / View Menu).
  • Collapse View, Show on Bottom, Details / Layout Options bar Activity Details / Bottom Layout toolbar onto the Define how-to's Display Activity Details.
  • Invent that the Activity Details available-tab list printed Update History, or collapse WPS & Docs onto WPs & Docs.
  • Invent that General tab printed labeled Priority or Cost Account fields. Those words are in the purpose sentence.
  • Copy EPPM Save / ID/Code / Location / Activity Owner / Cloud-integration Activity ID note onto Professional, or copy Professional Display Activity Details / click each tab / double-click onto EPPM.
  • Copy EPPM activity-owner / status-reviewer / Team Member work-distribution privilege sentences onto Professional Edit.
  • Copy Cloud auto-save / find and replace onto P6.
  • Invent an EDITACTIVITY / EDITACT / DEFINEGENERAL / CHANGEACTIVITY XER table, or treat a changed TASK row as “the planner used Define general” or “the planner double-clicked the Activity Table.”
  • Claim a Viewer reconstructed that the planner last used Edit Activity from an XER.
  • Map P6 Edit Activity to MSP Task Information / Shift+F2 / F2 / sheet-cell edit as the same command.
  • Claim MPXJ writes a real MPP.
