Display the Activity Network

Display the Activity Network is View, Show on Top, Activity Network; it opens the view

P6 Gantt of sample EC00515. Horizontal bars on a quarter/month timescale.
This is the Gantt. Display Activity Network is View, Show on Top, Activity Network, not this chart.

What a planner means

Display the Activity Network is Oracle Display the Activity Network. With the Activities window active: View, Show on Top, Activity Network; or Layout Options bar → Show on Top, Activity Network; or the Top Layout toolbar. It opens the view. It is a how-to. It is not stored as its own table. It does not create, edit, or delete a relationship. It is not the Activity Network view object, not View activity relationships in the Activity Network, not Create / Edit / Delete relationships in the Activity Network, not Add activities in the Activity Network, not Customize the Activity Network layout, not Save and Open an Activity Network Layout, not Display the Gantt Chart, not Display Trace Logic, not the Trace Logic view object, not View activity relationships in the Gantt Chart / Activity Details / Activity Table / Trace logic, not Show Relationships, not Chart View, not TASKPRED, not EPPM About Activity Networks / Working with the Activity Network / Activity Network Format of the Activities Page copied onto Professional, and not Microsoft View > Network Diagram.

Oracle does print a how-to titled Display the Activity Network. Oracle does not print a menu item named Display the Activity Network. The menu that how-to prints is View, Show on Top, Activity Network. Do not invent View > Display the Activity Network.

Oracle Display the Activity Network (Professional):

  • "With the Activities window active, do one of the following:"
  • "Choose View, Show on Top, Activity Network."
  • "Click the Layout Options bar and choose Show on Top, Activity Network."
  • "Click on the Top Layout toolbar."

Tip: "To hide the left pane and display only the Activity Network, drag the split bar separating the right and left panes all the way to the left."

Quote those. Quote Activities window active, View, Show on Top, Activity Network, Layout Options bar, Show on Top, Activity Network, Top Layout toolbar, hide the left pane, display only the Activity Network, and split bar separating the right and left panes. That how-to fetched prints no "Choose Project, Activities,", no Show on Bottom, no Projects or Work Breakdown Structure windows, no Activity Table, no "Layout bar" (the object page's display list), no "From the View menu, choose Show on Top, Activity Network", no "Shows or hides the Activity Network in the top layout", no Activity Network Options / open / save from the toolbar icon, no WBS hierarchy, no "The left pane of the Activity Network layout always displays the WBS hierarchy", no red border, no critical, no "A line connecting activity boxes indicates an activity relationship", no hierarchy table, no four begins-on / ends-on sentences, no finish to start / finish to finish / start to finish / start to start, no FS / FF / SF / SS codes, no relationship pointer, no draw, no hint help window, no Double-click, no Delete, no Yes, no OK, no lag days, no Relationship Type, no comments, no .ANP, no Save Network Positions / Open Network Positions, no Activity Box Template, no Organize Along the Top / Longest on Top, no Show Progress, no Alt+drag zoom, no PERT, no privilege, no Save, and no menu item named Display the Activity Network. Do not invent those on this how-to.

The Activity Network view is a different object. Oracle Activity Network: it "displays your project as a diagram of activities and relationships according to the work breakdown structure (WBS)." "A red border around an activity box indicates a critical activity." "A line connecting activity boxes indicates an activity relationship." "The left pane of the Activity Network layout always displays the WBS hierarchy, regardless of the current grouping selection. The right pane displays the selected WBS element's assigned activities." You can "Combine the Activity Network with a Trace Logic layout to focus on a specific sequence of activities." Box positions save as .ANP. That object page's To display the Activity Network list prints Layout bar and From the View menu, choose Show on Top, Activity Network — not this how-to's Layout Options bar and Choose View, Show on Top, Activity Network. This Display how-to fetched prints none of the WBS / red-border / line-connecting-boxes sentences. Opening the view is not the view object. Do not copy the object page onto this how-to. See Activity Network.

View activity relationships in the Activity Network is a different how-to. "The Activity Network displays a graphical view of all activity relationships for a specific activity filter." "In the hierarchy table on the left side of the Activity Network, select the hierarchy element whose activity relationships you want to view." "A line connecting two activity boxes indicates an activity relationship." Four begins-on / ends-on predecessor's box / successor's box sentences. That how-to assumes the Network is already up. This Display how-to only opens it. That view how-to fetched prints no View, Show on Top, Activity Network / Layout Options bar / Top Layout toolbar / hide-the-left-pane tip. Do not collapse them. See View Activity Relationships in the Activity Network.

Create relationships in the Activity Network is a different how-to. Draw from the edge of the predecessor activity box. That creates a line. This opens the view. See Create Relationships in the Activity Network.

Edit / Delete relationships in the Activity Network are different how-tos. Double-click the line. See Edit Relationships in the Activity Network and Delete Relationships in the Activity Network.

Add activities in the Activity Network is a different how-to. Select the group band or another activity box, then Edit toolbar or Edit > Add. This Display how-to fetched prints no Edit > Add. Adding an activity is not opening the view.

Customize the Activity Network layout is a different how-to. View > Activity Network > Activity Network Options, or Layout Options bar > Activity Network, Activity Network Options. Organize Along the Top / Centered, Show Progress, Longest / Shortest on Top. This Display how-to fetched prints no Activity Network Options. Customizing boxes is not opening the view.

Save and Open an Activity Network Layout is a different how-to. Layout Options bar → Activity Network, Save Network Positions or Open Network Positions. Oracle: browse to "the directory where the saved layout (ANP) file is located." That is a .ANP file, not a project XER and not a .plf. This Display how-to fetched prints no Save Network Positions, no Open Network Positions, and no .ANP. See Filters and Layouts Are a View, Not the Schedule.

Display the Gantt Chart is a different how-to. "With the Activities, Projects, or Work Breakdown Structure windows active, do one of the following:" View, Show on Top or Show on Bottom, Gantt Chart; Layout Options bar → Show on Top or Show on Bottom, Gantt Chart; Top Layout toolbar. Tip: "In the Projects and Work Breakdown Structure windows, you can only display the Gantt Chart in the top layout." Tip: "To hide the Activity Table and display only the Gantt Chart, drag the split bar that separates the Activity Table from the Gantt Chart all the way to the left." Quote Show on Top or Show on Bottom, Activities, Projects, or Work Breakdown Structure, Activity Table, and that Gantt split-bar sentence. This Display how-to prints Activities window only, Show on Top only, left pane, and right and left panes. Do not collapse left pane onto Activity Table. Do not invent that Display the Activity Network printed Show on Bottom or Projects / WBS windows.

Display Trace Logic is a different how-to. "With the Activities window active, do one of the following:" Bottom Layout toolbar; View, Show on Bottom, Trace Logic; Layout Options bar → Show on Bottom, Trace Logic. Note: "The activity boxes in Trace Logic display the same information as the boxes defined for the current Activity Network layout." That is Show on Bottom. This is Show on Top. This Display how-to fetched prints no Show on Bottom, no Bottom Layout toolbar, and no boxes-equal-Activity-Network-layout note. Do not collapse them.

Trace Logic is a different view. Show on Bottom; "displays a graphical view of only the selected activity's relationships." It is not this Show-on-Top open. See Trace Logic.

View activity relationships in the Gantt Chart is a different how-to. Layout Options bar → Show on Top, Gantt Chart. "A line connecting two activity bars indicates an activity relationship." See View Activity Relationships in the Gantt Chart.

View activity relationships in Activity Details / the Activity Table / Trace logic are different how-tos. Details tabs; Predecessor Details / Successor Details columns; Show on Bottom selected-activity boxes. None of those open the Activity Network. See View Activity Relationships in Activity Details, View Activity Relationships in the Activity Table, and View Activity Relationships in Trace Logic.

Show Relationships is a different command. Bar Chart Options / Top Layout toolbar Gantt relationship-line show/hide. The Top Layout toolbar page lists that icon separately from Shows or hides the Activity Network. See Show Relationships.

Chart View is a different command. Top Layout toolbar: "Shows or hides a chart view." Enabled when Projects, Resources, WBS. Corresponding menu: View > Show on Top > Chart View. That is not Activity Network. Activity Network is enabled when the active window is Activities.

Oracle Activities window Available activity layouts: Activity Network (top layout only). Working with the Activity Network names Display the Activity Network as a separate task from Add activities, Apply Activity Network settings, Change activity box fonts and colors, Create / Edit / Delete / View relationships, Customize the activity box layout / Activity Network layout, Move around, Reorganize, Save and Open an Activity Network Layout, Select the activity box layout, and View Activity Network Activity Details. Working with the Gantt Chart names Display the Gantt Chart as a separate task. Working with Trace Logic names Display Trace Logic as a separate task. Do not collapse those titles.

Oracle Top Layout toolbar: "Shows or hides the Activity Network in the top layout. To set Activity Network options, open an Activity Network layout, or save the Activity Network layout, click the icon, then choose the appropriate option." Enabled when active window is Activities. Corresponding menu: View > Show on Top > Activity Network. That toolbar page fetched prints no how-to titled Display the Activity Network and no hide-the-left-pane split-bar tip. This Display how-to fetched prints no "Shows or hides the Activity Network in the top layout" and no options / open / save from the icon. Do not copy the toolbar extra sentence onto this how-to.

Oracle Viewing activity relationships lists five View how-tos. It does not list Display the Activity Network. Do not invent that it did.

Oracle Linking Activities with Relationships lists Create / Edit / Delete Gantt and Network. It does not list Display. Do not invent that it did.

Add/Edit/Delete Activity Relationships privilege (Professional project profile): "Determines whether the profile will enable users to create, modify, and remove activity relationships assigned to projects." The Display the Activity Network how-to fetched does not print that privilege. Do not invent that it did.

The Professional Display the Activity Network page fetched does not print driving / non-driving, solid vs dashed, critical relationship color, a milestone diamond, status icons, or PERT. Do not invent them. Oracle current Professional help names this view Activity Network, not PERT. Do not invent PERT as an Oracle alias on this how-to.

Professional vs EPPM

Professional — the how-to above. View, Show on Top, Activity Network / Layout Options bar / Top Layout toolbar. Hide-the-left-pane split-bar tip. Activities window only. Show on Top only. That page fetched prints no Save, no Activity Network View, no Navigation Menu, and no Show Driving Relationships.

EPPM web — do not copy Professional View, Show on Top, Activity Network / Layout Options bar / Top Layout toolbar / hide-the-left-pane tip onto EPPM.

Oracle EPPM About Activity Networks: "An Activity Network is a graphical display of activities and their logical relationships according to the WBS." You can "view activity relationship paths and the flow of work through a project." "Activity Networks also allow you to examine and edit an activity and its predecessors and successors." That page fetched does not print View, Show on Top, Activity Network, Layout Options bar, Top Layout toolbar, or the hide-the-left-pane tip. Do not invent that it did. Do not copy About Activity Networks onto this Professional Display how-to.

Oracle EPPM Working with the Activity Network: "In addition to the Activity Table format, you can also view activities in an Activity Network." "Activity View: Click Activity Network View." Arrows between boxes; red/blue outlines; solid driving / dashed non-driving; Show Driving Relationships / Show Critical Activities. That page fetched does not print View, Show on Top, Layout Options bar, Top Layout toolbar, or the hide-the-left-pane tip. Do not invent that it did. Do not invent that Professional printed Activity Network View, Click Activity Network View, or those EPPM visual cues.

Oracle EPPM Activity Network Format of the Activities Page: "Use the Activity Network format to view activities and their relationships as a network." Getting Here: Navigation Menu → Projects → Activities; Click Activity Network View. Red/black outlines; solid red critical relationship lines; milestone diamond; status icons; Zoom In / Out / to 100% / to Fit; Show Driving Relationships; Show Critical Activities. That page fetched does not print View, Show on Top, Layout Options bar, Top Layout toolbar, or the hide-the-left-pane tip. Do not invent that it did. Do not invent that Professional printed Click Activity Network View, Getting Here, or those EPPM format cues.

Primavera Cloud is a different product. Do not copy Cloud network / Gantt view onto P6 Professional or EPPM.

XER

None. Oracle's project XER map TOC has no DISPLAYNETWORK / DISPLAYACTNETWORK / ACTIVITYNETWORK / ACTNETWORK / ANP / NETWORK / LAYOUT / DISPLAY_ACTIVITY_NETWORK table. This how-to does not write TASKPRED. Do not invent a view %T. Do not treat a TASKPRED row as "the planner used Display the Activity Network."

TASKPRED is the relationship. The Display the Activity Network how-to fetched does not print those column names. Opening the view does not create a relationship. See TASKPRED (Activity Relationships).

Layouts travel as .plf, not in a project XER. Network positions travel as a separate .ANP file (Save / Open Network Positions). Neither is this Display how-to. See Filters and Layouts Are a View, Not the Schedule and Activity Network.

A Viewer parse of one XER cannot reconstruct whether the planner used this Display how-to, had Show on Top set to Activity Network, used View activity relationships in the Activity Network, Display the Gantt Chart, Display Trace Logic, or EPPM Activity Network View.

Microsoft Project

Desktop Project has a Network Diagram. Microsoft: "A Network Diagram is a graphical way to view tasks, dependencies, and the critical path of your project." "Boxes (or nodes) represent tasks, and dependencies show up as lines that connect those boxes." "To find the Network diagram view, choose View > Network Diagram."

Quote View > Network Diagram, Network Diagram, boxes (or nodes), and critical path. P6 printed View, Show on Top, Activity Network, Layout Options bar, Top Layout toolbar, Activities window active, and hide the left pane. Do not collapse them. Microsoft pages fetched print no View, Show on Top, Activity Network, no Layout Options bar, no Top Layout toolbar, and no "To hide the left pane and display only the Activity Network." Do not invent that they did. They are not the same command as P6 Display the Activity Network. Do not map P6 Display the Activity Network to MSP View > Network Diagram as the same how-to. Do not claim MPXJ writes a real MPP.

Don't

  • Treat this as the Activity Network view object, View activity relationships in the Activity Network, Create / Edit / Delete Network, Add activities in the Activity Network, Customize the Activity Network layout, Save / Open Network Positions, Display the Gantt Chart, Display Trace Logic, Trace Logic, View Gantt / Details / Table / Trace, Show Relationships, Chart View, TASKPRED, EPPM About / Working with / Format copied onto Professional, or MSP View > Network Diagram.

  • Collapse Display Gantt Activity Table / Show on Top or Show on Bottom / Activities, Projects, or Work Breakdown Structure onto this how-to's left pane / Show on Top / Activities window.
  • Collapse Display Trace Logic Show on Bottom / boxes-equal-Activity-Network-layout note onto this Show-on-Top open.
  • Invent that this how-to printed WBS hierarchy, red border, a line connecting activity boxes, four type sentences, FS / FF / SF / SS codes, draw, Double-click, .ANP, Activity Network Options, Shows or hides, options / open / save from the icon, PERT, Show on Bottom, Projects / WBS windows, or a menu item named Display the Activity Network.
  • Invent that Viewing activity relationships or Linking Activities with Relationships listed this Display how-to.
  • Invent that the Display how-to printed Add/Edit/Delete Activity Relationships.
  • Copy Professional View, Show on Top / Layout Options bar / hide-the-left-pane tip onto EPPM, or copy EPPM Click Activity Network View / Getting Here / driving-dashed / red-black outlines / milestone diamond onto Professional.
  • Invent a DISPLAYNETWORK / DISPLAYACTNETWORK / ACTIVITYNETWORK / ANP / NETWORK / LAYOUT XER table, or treat a TASKPRED row as "the planner used Display the Activity Network."
  • Claim a Viewer reconstructed that the planner last used this Display how-to or had Show on Top set to Activity Network from an XER.
  • Map P6 Display the Activity Network to MSP View > Network Diagram as the same how-to.
  • Invent that Microsoft printed View, Show on Top, Activity Network or the hide-the-left-pane tip.
  • Claim MPXJ writes a real MPP.
